Which QR code scanning apps should you tell people to use?

UPDATED: May 24, 2020

So you’ve just made a gnarly ShareSquare page for yourself, put the corresponding QR code on all posters, and you get a call from your mom saying she wants to check it out.  What do you tell her?

One of the best things about ShareSquare QR codes (and most QR codes for that matter) is that there’s a whole bunch of barcode scanning applications out there and almost all of them also read QR codes, so there’s a good chance your mom’s phone already has one installed.

Quick sidebar: one great way for a QR code to be a major FAIL is if the information encoded in it only makes sense if you use a specific app.  This is called an “indirect” code.  (All ShareSquare QR codes are “direct”.)  Similar, but even worse, is Microsoft’s proprietary attempt at making codes, called Tag.  It only works with their own reader.  Nice try, Redmond.

Back to your mom.  These are the barcode scanning apps we’d unequivocally recommend, and all should be free.  You’ll notice that many other “Best QR Code Reader” lists out there say different things: they’re out of date.  QR codes are blowing up and as of right now these are your best bets, trust us on this one.

Here at ShareSquare, we unequivocally recommend ShopSavvy as the barcode scanning app of choice. With +18M downloads and the best QR code recognition capabilities, it’s our standalone favorite.  However, since it’s a best practice, ShareSquare QR codes will ALWAYS work with ANY barcode scanning app that supports QR codes.
